As part of the North of Boston
Businesswomen of the Year Awards
Breakfast, Eastern Bank and The Daily Item
each award a $1,000 scholarship to a
deserving North Shore Community College
student.
The recipient of the Eastern Bank scholarship
is Ashley Souther of Newbury. Souther
carries a full-time course load while working
two jobs to help fund her education. Prior to
her year at North Shore Community College,
she attended Johnson & Wales University
where she obtained 25 credits.
Souther was recommended by NSCC
business professor Arthur Neuner, who
describes her as a hard working, organized,
enthusiastic learner who still finds time to
volunteer with community causes.
“In our accounting course, her assignments
were always well done and on time,” said
Neuner. “She had no problem keeping pace
with the material and sometimes seemed as if
she was a little bit ahead of the rest of the
group. Ashley works hard in and out of
school, is bright and also focused on obtaining
her degree.”
Marcey Marold, NSCC coordinator of the
honors program, agrees.
“Her ability to analyze, interpret, and make
meaning of a literary text is impressive, and
her willingness to share her observations
enhances our class discussions,” said Marold.
Souther holds a 3.94 GPA, and was recently
inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor
Society, the international honor society for
two-year colleges. Her goal is to complete
her associate’s degree at NSCC and then
work toward a bachelor’s degree at Salem
State College.
The recipient of The Daily Item scholarship
is Kimberly Woodbury of Salem. With
a 3.93 GPA, Woodbury finds the necessary
balance between working full-time and continuing
her educational journey. Her
employment history follows a strong path in
both finance and customer service with a
side passion for spirituality and holistic healing
techniques. She is certified in Reiki and
enjoys playing the flute.
“Kimberly is one of those students that
come along every so often,” said NSCC faculty
member Terrance Dugan. “She is bright,
expressive, mature, and going to school at
night to advance herself.”
“I have had the pleasure of getting to know
Kim as she has taken my course,” said
Christopher Soucy, NSCC human resource
management professor. “In teaching this
course, it is always interesting to see how
students’ wide range of personal life experience
and work experience affects the overall
learning of the material, for both themselves
and other students. I came to value Kim’s
input during class as she willingly stepped
forward to provide numerous work-related
anecdotes. She is a great student.”
Woodbury plans to complete her NSCC
degree and pursue a bachelor’s degree in
human resources at a four-year institution.
