Award-winning photographer and author
Ulrike Welsch of Marblehead is a native of Germany who became the first
female staff photographer for a Boston newspaper when she went to work for
the Boston Herald Traveler. She later joined the Boston Globe, where her
honors included New England Press Photographer of the Year in 1974.
Welsch’s first collection of photographs
was published in 1977 by Houghton Mifflin, the second by the Globe Pequot
Press in 1981. Since then, she has worked independently and traveled the
world to take pictures. Her later books have included “Marblehead,”
“Boston Rediscovered,” and “Boston’s North Shore.” She has also published
three calendars of images from the North Shore.
